    Clear Your Skin With These Positive Affirmations
    This is one of the most powerful techniques I will ever teach you. The power of your own mind. What if I told you that the thoughts you think, actually shape your life for better for your worse? What if I told you that you clear your skin by changing the way you think?

    For some of you, this may seem crazy. For others, you would have heard of positive affirmations before and how they can change your life for the better. This is not some voodoo technique that has never been used before, affirmations have actually been used for years and have been known to be VERY effective.

    So how do affirmations work and how can you use them to clear your skin and change your life for the better?

    Stop The Negative Self Talk

    That’s right. I’m talking about that little voice inside your head that tells you that you’re not good enough, that you’re too fat to wear that and that you can’t leave the house without makeup. I want you to take note of how many times a day you are entertaining negative self-talk, then I want you to replace each of those thoughts with a new, positive thought. I can guarantee you that the amount of times a day that you notice negative self-talk, will blow you away! After around three weeks, this process will begin to be a habit.

    Learn To Love Yourself

    When was the last time you did something nice for yourself? There an abundance of nice things you can do to yourself but we are often so busy looking after others that we forget to look after ourselves. Run yourself a bath, nourish your body lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, drink more water, pay yourself a compliment. This is about learning to love yourself again, before and after having acne regardless of what your skin or your body looks like. Ultimately, you are still the same person inside regardless of what your exterior looks like. Don’t wait until you’ve lost that weight, got that job or cleared your skin to love yourself. Love yourself as you are, right now.

    Practice Affirmations Everyday

    Affirmations are not something that you can say once and your life will miraculously change over night. Like all things, practice makes perfect and affirmations are exactly the same. It’s best to allow 20 minutes per day to practice saying your affirmations for best results. You can achieve even better results in a shorter time frame if you practice in front of a mirror. I know it seems ridiculous, but by saying your affirmations in front of a mirror, you are making them 10x more powerful! It’s important to look into your eyes and say them with true belief in present tense. This is not a time to say “I will have clear skin and a healthy body”, this is a time to say “I have clear skin and a healthy body.” By saying affirmations in a PRESENT tense you are affirming these statements are true and correct. I believe that 30 days of affirmations will change your life, but you’ll see the true benefit by practicing every day for the rest of your life. Every day, you will feel happier and healthier.

    Here are some examples of positive affirmations:

    • I love and approve of myself
    • I am in perfect health
    • I stand up for myself
    • I am ready to enjoy perfect health
    • I eat foods that are healthy and whole
    • I drink lots of water every day
    • I exercise regularly to keep myself fit and energetic
    • I love my body more and more every day
    • I am happy with my appearance

    The most important thing to remember with affirmations is that you must practice them often. I’ve seen clients use them, practice every day and really make some great changes in their lives. Once they reap the benefits, they stop practicing and sooner or later fall victim to the same old ways of thinking.

    Practice your affirmations every single day. If you miss a day, that doesn’t matter just pick up where you left off whenever you remember.

    7 Ways To Reduce Toxins and Detox Your Skin
    Do you suffer from hormonal acne around the chin and jaw line? Breakouts in these areas signal a hormone imbalance or increased stress. Your skin is the largest organ of elimination and when your body is over burdened it can result in toxins excreting through your skin. There are things that you can do to prevent and treat these pesky breakouts. Find out how to clear your skin with my TOP detox tips for clearer skin NOW!

    Increase your water intake

    Water governs almost every function in your body. It aids digestion, circulation, absorption and even excretion. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and is made up of millions of cells. Without water, your body cannot function properly and will struggle to eliminate toxins from your body. When this happens, your body will look to other ways of excreting toxins and can often result in breakouts on your skin.

    TIP: Aim to drink 7-9 glasses of water every day. If you are drinking from a bottle, make sure it’s glass. I love the VOSS bottles and often add lemon slices for an extra detox idea!

    Eat organic wherever possible

    Did you know that your body absorbs majority of its toxins through FOOD? That’s right. Processed foods, sugars, soft drink and foods with artificial flavours are the WORST foods you can eat for acne. These foods increase inflammation in the body, hold little nutritional value and can irritate your gut.

    The best way to avoid toxin intake through food is to eat organic whenever possible and completely avoid processed foods. This isn’t always an option when out and about and it can be more expensive to buy organic when you are doing grocery shopping. That’s why I’ve created an easy DIY Veggie Patch idea that can be created in even the smallest of spaces! Check it out HERE!

    TIP: Avoid foods containing artificial colours, flavours, hormones 

    Use natural skincare products

    I only ever recommend natural skincare products to my clients. This because most mass cosmetic companies use ingredients such as mineral oils, PEGS, petrochemicals, artificial colours and fragrances, SLS/SLES and more as a base for their formulas. These ingredients are known to irritate the skin, cause cancer and even make conditions like acne WORSE! These ingredients are absorbed by the skin and can enter your bloodstream leaving you open to absorbing more toxins into your body.

    TIP: Choose a natural skincare brand with no nasties and a low essential oil content. My favourite brands for skincare and makeup include Swisse and VANI-T Mineral Cosmetics.

    Say no to chemical cleaning products

    This is a BIG one. It’s important to remember that what goes ON, goes IN. That means that whenever you are washing the dishes, hand washing clothes or any other type of cleaning that involves contact of cleaning products with your skin, your body is absorbing chemicals.

    Opt for natural cleaning products instead that use minimal or NO chemicals. You can even make your own cleaning products using vinegar, essentials oils and even baking soda.

    TIP: If you MUST use chemical cleaning products, make sure you are wearing rubber gloves so that no chemical contact is made with your skin.

    Drink more tea

    When I say tea, I mean herbal tea.  Stay clear of traditional black tea, english breakfast and early grey. Instead, opt for a yummy ginger, dandelion, liquorice, burdock, nettle or chamomile tea that will soothe your digestive system and calm your skin. These teas will naturally improve digestion, liver function and aid your body in its natural processes.

    If your desperate for a caffeine hit or are trying to give up the coffee, opt for a green tea instead. My personal favourite is a green tea and quince blend – delish!

    TIP: Be sure to have an extra glass of water for every diuretic style tea that you consume to ensure your body and skin are always hydrated.

    Take a Detoxifying Bath

    Detox baths are an amazing way to treat your skin and detox toxins from your body. One of my favourite recipes for a detox bath is:

    Fill a bathtub with hot water. Add a cup of Epsom salts (buy at the supermarket or pharmacy/drug store) and a cup of organic apple cider vinegar (I use Bragg) to the water. This will draw out impurities and toxins from the pores as well as ease any tension from your muscles.

    TIP: Relax in the bath for 20 minutes for best results. You can use this detox bath idea every day if you enjoy it as much as I do!

    Treat Yourself To A Face Mask

    Treat yourself to a detoxifying face mask once or twice a week and help your skin to eliminate extra toxins. When it comes to beauty products they are often expensive, toxic, and ineffective. Often, those very products are loading our precious bodies with toxins which only accelerate the ageing process and overburden our system.

    Try this detoxifying face mask recipe at home.

    Ingredients:

    • 2 tbsp bentonite clay
    • 1 tbsp organic apple cider vinegar
    • 1 tsp coconut oil
    • 1 tsp raw honey
    • Juice of half a lemon

    Combine all ingredients together in a small mixing bowl and apply to clean skin. Leave for 15-20 minutes and rinse well with water or a muslin cloth.

    TIP: For a deeper cleanse, use an organic cotton muslin cloth to remove your mask. They are even machine washable!

    The most important piece of advice I can give you is to take small, simple steps to improve your health and your skin. Don’t feel like you have to change everything at once. Be open to the change, try introducing one tip every week and make it part of a new lifestyle as opposed to a quick fad.

    DIY Herb Garden Veggie Patch
    One of the most important things you can do for your skin is eat ORGANIC. One of the main causes of hormonal acne is toxin related. By eating organic produce, you are reducing the amount of toxins that enter your bloodstream when compared to consuming commercial produce that has been sprayed with pesticides.

    It can be expensive to buy organic produce in some areas, so why not grow your own? Try these amazing DIY pallet gardens that you can plant with all your favourite fruit, vegetables and herbs! These are great for low-space areas or apartments where you don’t have a lot of room for a complete veggie patch.

    What you’ll need:

    • Potting soil
    • Staple gun and lots of staples
    • Pallet(s)
    • Seeds
    • Landscaping paper

    Directions:

    1. Place your pallet on a solid working surface with the bottom of the pallet facing UP.

    2. Roll out your landscaping paper to cover the bottom and sides and cut to size.

    3. Pull tautly onto the pallet covering the bottom of the pallet and all sides. Staple into position, folding the paper into the corners neatly.

    4. When the landscaping paper is firmly stapled to the pallet on the bottom and all sides, turn over so the top is now facing up.

    5. Add your potting soil mix to the pallet until the area is full. Do not use normal garden soil for this as it may not drain properly. Potting soil is definitely best and is quite inexpensive for the area we are covering!

    6. Now for the fun part! Plant your seeds or plants as per the instructions on the seed packet.

    7. Water and enjoy the harvest!

    TIP: If you are short on space, you can create vertical pallets too! This is a great idea if you live in an apartment or somewhere with limited garden space.

    How To Rebuild Your Confidence When You Have Bad Skin
    I know the feeling oh, too well!  You’ve gone from being this social butterfly with clear glowing skin to a depressed, sad and anxious hermit. Putting on makeup hurts. It’s so much effort and you still don’t feel confident with a whole face of “war paint”. You feel helpless and have no idea what to do.

    It wasn’t too long ago that I would have given my left arm to be cured of acne. I didn’t want to leave the house to do my food shopping, let alone go out and face the world in a social setting. So how do you deal with the social anxiety you feel on a daily basis?

    Stop The Negative Cycle

    We are constantly looking in the mirror thinking how ugly we are or how ashamed we are of our skin. How is that type of environment meant to foster any type of positive emotion?

    Believe it or not, the times when you hate yourself the most are the best times to practice positive thinking.

    Do any of these thoughts sound familiar?

    • I can’t do that/go there because my skin is too bad
    • I’m not good enough
    • Other people are more attractive or more successful than me
    • I don’t do things as well as other people do
    • I don’t have time to look after myself/rest
    • I can’t afford this

    Part of the reason we are so down about ourselves is because we haven’t showed ourselves any love. As we begin to spend more time working on ourselves, confidence will gradually be rebuilt.

    Rebuild Your Confidence with Daily Positive Affirmations

    Affirmations are positive statements that you say to yourself daily. They are best done in front of a mirror so you can look into your own eyes. Sounds a little strange huh? Truth be told, this is one of the most effective ways to re-build a positive body image. Telling yourself that you are enough, you are loved and you are beautiful as you are.

    It’s hard to like yourself when you look in the mirror and you just want to cry. I totally get it. But feeling down about ourselves will not make the situation any better.

    The best thing you can do is beginning to rebuild your confidence again. The best results come from daily positive affirmations. It’s very simple to do and anyone can do it, virtually anywhere!

    Start with some very basic affirmations such as:

    • I love and approve of myself.
    • I trust in the process of life, I am safe.
    • I am pleased with my appearance.

    Repeat these statements over and over in front of a mirror for 10-20 minutes. If you repeat this every day for 30 days, you will start to see and feel big changes in your life. You will notice a shift in your confidence; suddenly you will notice that you’re starting to feel good about yourself again.

    It’s so important to continue with your affirmations even after you start seeing results, as self-love is something that we must continue to do everyday until it really becomes a habit and our way of thinking changes for the better, forever.

    Put Yourself First

    That’s right. This is a healing journey and in order to help others, you must first help yourself.  I am a huge advocate of being kind to others and helping out whenever you can however, I also know my boundaries and how to best look after myself. This is something you must learn to do in order to heal your body and regain your confidence.

    Saying no to things you don’t feel like you don’t feel you can commit to is completely okay.

    Set yourself a routine to stick to that allows time to prepare your meals properly, complete school or work commitments, spend time with your family and see friends on a social basis.

    There also needs to be at least an hour of every day dedicated just for you. That could be anything from going for a walk, daily affirmations, having a nice cup of tea and relaxing, meditation or yoga. It’s up to you.

    What do you feel like doing for yourself today? Cherish that time and allow your body time to relax after the stress of the day.

    How Long Before I Start Seeing Changes?

    Every one is different and will experience healing in different time frames. The most important thing to remember is to be patient with yourself and your body. The best thing you can do is not get angry at yourself when you don’t notice changes straight away, they WILL come.

    Before long, you will feel your body becoming stronger and your thought processes becoming more positive. You realize that clear skin will come as a result of loving yourself. Nourishing your body with healthy foods, hydrating your body with lots of clean water and making positive lifestyle choices that show yourself respect.

    Make some time today to write a weekly plan for yourself considering nutrition, lifestyle and exercise. Include a daily time slot for affirmations and do this for a minimum of 30 days. Share your experiences with me in the comments below, I would love to hear from you!

  • My Week in Bali: Detox Retreat

    Detox Retreat
    Holidays. They’re one of those things that you always think about doing, but never get the time to do. There’s never a “right time” for a holiday because life goes on and there’s always something to catch up on when you’re home.

    Truth be told, we need rest. It’s important to give your body time to recover and heal in order to de-stress and detox the body. Rest and recovery also play a vital role in keeping your skin clean and clear.

    The Organic Eco Village

    My choice of paradise was Desa Seni Resort located in the beautiful Canggu, Bali. From the moment you arrive, you will be inspired to live a healthier life. Think organic vegetables, perfectly manicured gardens and a custom detox menu. The grounds and menu however, were just the beginning.

    Desa Seni Health Resort is located just 15 minutes away from Seminyak offering a true cultural experience. The resort is organic, eco-green, and offers some traditional Balinese healing treatments.

    The Detox Program

    Desa Seni invites you to choose between multiple detox packages including intermittent fasting, rebalancing the self and detoxification. My choice was the 8-night detox package.

    My package included:

    • Custom detox menu made with organic vegetables (breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks)
    • Daily yoga (sometimes twice daily!)
    • Daily acupuncture with the amazing Dr. Thomas Sladek (highlight of my trip)

    My Experience at Desa Seni: Life Changing

     They say you get worse before you get better and I definitely agree with this. The first few days of the detox, I was incredibly grumpy and emotional. I chose to stay on the resort and completely commit myself to the detox so I could experience the best results.

    By doing this, I stuck to the diet 100% and did not have any distractions or comfort food. This was probably the thing I noticed the most. When you take the comforts and crutches away, you really can focus on healing yourself.

    The daily Yoga was fantastic. It encourages you to still the mind, let go of things that have happened in the past and strengthen your body. I think it’s a perfect type of exercise to combine with this type of healing program as it’s not overly strenuous on the body while it is trying to heal.

    I literally felt as though all the toxins in my body were coming to the surface in the first few days of the program. By the fifth day, I started to feel incredible. I had more energy, I felt lighter, could think clearer and my skin was looking amazing.

    The daily acupuncture treatments were my favourite part of the detox. The knowledge that Dr Thomas Sladek has on the body is fantastic. I asked lots of questions during my treatment and we discovered a weakness in my body that I am now working on improving here in Australia.

    These four poses help to increase blood circulation to the head and face area, which in turn can lead to clear, glowing skin.  Don’t worry if you have never tried yoga before, these are fairly simple yet still offer the maximum benefit to your skin!

    My Top 4 Yoga Poses to Clear Skin:

    Standing Forward Bend (Uttanasana)

    • Stand up tall with your hands by your side.
    • Place your hands on your hips and inhale.
    • As you exhale, soften your knees and fold down slowly from your hips.
    • Place your hands onto your legs, ankles or the floor.

    Corpse Pose (Savasana)

    • Lie on your back with your feet spread slightly apart
    • Inhale deeply and hold it while tensing your whole body
    • After tensing your body for a few seconds, exhale and release as if to let go of your stress

    Seated Forward Bend Pose (Paschimottanasana)

    • Sit down with your legs stretched out in front of you
    • Stretch your lower back and raise your arms above your head
    • Slowly bend forward
    • Place your hands on your lower legs, ankles or feet

    Cross Legged Pose (Sukhasana)

    • Sit on a yoga mat or cushioned surface
    • Arrange your legs in a cross legged position
    • Place your hands on your knees with your palms facing up and your index finger and thumbs gently touching

    Try these poses at home for 5-10 minutes every morning as a perfect way to start your day!
