  • 5 Reasons Why The BEST Beauty Trick Is Not Washing Your Face

    Here’s the thing: I don’t wash my face with a cleanser anymore. I mean yes, I use water on it daily if I’m wearing foundation or makeup. But soap or facial cleansers? No way.

    Read on to find out why the BEST beauty trick is NOT washing your face.

    1. Over washing your face can cause more breakouts

    To be honest, I’ve always believed that over cleansing the skin was a bad idea. This is mainly because you can do more damage by trying to scrub your face clean with harsh cleansers and soaps. The result is more breakouts for your skin and less confidence.

    2. Cleansers may contain harmful chemical ingredients

    To this day, I still avoid most cleansers as many contain harsh foaming agents like Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Not only are these ingredients toxic for the skin, but they can also result in dryness and skin irritation.

    3. Rinsing results in a clearer complexion

    The good news is, there is growing evidence that women say their complexions are clearer when they simply rinse instead of cleanse. This is most likely because we are trained to over-wash our skin and strip it of precious natural oils that form a protective barrier. The solution: throw out your chemical based cleanser and your skin will love you for it!

    4. Over washing your face can make your skin more oily

    That’s right. Sounds odd doesn’t it? Truth be told, over cleansing your skin can have the reverse effect on oil production. Harshly stripping the natural oils from your skin can cause an imbalance. After harsh soaps strip all the precious oils, the skins response is to over compensate and create MORE oil. The result – oilier skin and more breakouts.

    5. Over washing your face can result in premature ageing

    Oil helps to keep our skin nourished and protected. It makes sense that if you remove all of the skins natural oils, you would be more likely to be prone to premature ageing right? It can also disrupt the skin’s delicate barrier causing accelerated skin ageing.

    The solution: a magical face cloth

    That’s where the magical face cloth comes in. Simply wet, wring out and this magical face cloth will remove all traces of dirt, impurities and makeup – without the need for any cleanser!

    That’s right. You don’t need to use any facial cleanser, facial wipe or makeup remover to remove all traces of makeup. This magical cloth does all the work for you.

    When you’re finished, simply wash in the hand basin and hang out to dry. Every few days, you can pop into the washing machine to keep it super fresh. The best news – it lasts for over 200 washes!

    To be honest, I was SUPER skeptical about this particular product as it claimed to be able to remove makeup with no product at all. After using the cloth a few times, I couldn’t believe it had the power to remove all traces of makeup without any product. Let’s just say, I haven’t stopped using it since.

    The best part is, it’s machine washable so you can use it over and over again. PLUS, it’s environmentally friendly and you won’t be throwing out packets of makeup remover wipes AND you get a deeper clean.

    Clear Your Skin With These Positive Affirmations
    This is one of the most powerful techniques I will ever teach you. The power of your own mind. What if I told you that the thoughts you think, actually shape your life for better for your worse? What if I told you that you clear your skin by changing the way you think?

    For some of you, this may seem crazy. For others, you would have heard of positive affirmations before and how they can change your life for the better. This is not some voodoo technique that has never been used before, affirmations have actually been used for years and have been known to be VERY effective.

    So how do affirmations work and how can you use them to clear your skin and change your life for the better?

    Stop The Negative Self Talk

    That’s right. I’m talking about that little voice inside your head that tells you that you’re not good enough, that you’re too fat to wear that and that you can’t leave the house without makeup. I want you to take note of how many times a day you are entertaining negative self-talk, then I want you to replace each of those thoughts with a new, positive thought. I can guarantee you that the amount of times a day that you notice negative self-talk, will blow you away! After around three weeks, this process will begin to be a habit.

    Learn To Love Yourself

    When was the last time you did something nice for yourself? There an abundance of nice things you can do to yourself but we are often so busy looking after others that we forget to look after ourselves. Run yourself a bath, nourish your body lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, drink more water, pay yourself a compliment. This is about learning to love yourself again, before and after having acne regardless of what your skin or your body looks like. Ultimately, you are still the same person inside regardless of what your exterior looks like. Don’t wait until you’ve lost that weight, got that job or cleared your skin to love yourself. Love yourself as you are, right now.

    Practice Affirmations Everyday

    Affirmations are not something that you can say once and your life will miraculously change over night. Like all things, practice makes perfect and affirmations are exactly the same. It’s best to allow 20 minutes per day to practice saying your affirmations for best results. You can achieve even better results in a shorter time frame if you practice in front of a mirror. I know it seems ridiculous, but by saying your affirmations in front of a mirror, you are making them 10x more powerful! It’s important to look into your eyes and say them with true belief in present tense. This is not a time to say “I will have clear skin and a healthy body”, this is a time to say “I have clear skin and a healthy body.” By saying affirmations in a PRESENT tense you are affirming these statements are true and correct. I believe that 30 days of affirmations will change your life, but you’ll see the true benefit by practicing every day for the rest of your life. Every day, you will feel happier and healthier.

    Here are some examples of positive affirmations:

    • I love and approve of myself
    • I am in perfect health
    • I stand up for myself
    • I am ready to enjoy perfect health
    • I eat foods that are healthy and whole
    • I drink lots of water every day
    • I exercise regularly to keep myself fit and energetic
    • I love my body more and more every day
    • I am happy with my appearance

    The most important thing to remember with affirmations is that you must practice them often. I’ve seen clients use them, practice every day and really make some great changes in their lives. Once they reap the benefits, they stop practicing and sooner or later fall victim to the same old ways of thinking.

    Practice your affirmations every single day. If you miss a day, that doesn’t matter just pick up where you left off whenever you remember.

  • The Truth About Accutane: The Side Effects Doctors Don’t Tell You About


    If you suffer from severe acne that has NOT responded to traditional acne treatments like low-dose antibiotics or birth control, your doctor or dermatologist may prescribe the popular acne treatment, Accutane or Roaccutane.

    Want to know the truth about Accutane? Read on:

    Accutane or Roaccutane is a drug that has been widely used to reduce acne symptoms after a course of approximately 4-6 months. It was originally prescribed to people who presented with severe acne that did not respond to other traditional treatments. However, it has since gained popularity has been prescribed more frequently for less severe acne.

    Why is Accutane one of the most controversial drugs on the planet?

    Most people are unaware of the documented list of severe and some permanent side effects associated to taking Accutane.

    Common side effects include:

    • Dry eyes
    • Dry lips
    • Nosebleeds
    • Sensitivity to sun
    • Thinning hair
    • Extremely dry skin

    Most people are aware of these tolerable side effects and choose to continue on with their course of Accutane. However, what many people don’t know is there is also a LONG list of serious side effects that have been reported which continued long after stopping the medication.

    More serious side effects include:

    • Severe allergic reactions
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Vision problems
    • Hearing loss
    • Permanent liver damage
    • Permanent migraines and headaches
    • Skeletal hyperostosis
    • Severe aches and pains in lower back
    • Birth defects (if taken when pregnant or trying to conceive)

    Due to the possibility of birth defects and harm to unborn child, it should never be used during pregnancy. Women who have taken the drug should avoid pregnancy for at least a month after ceasing taking the drug.

    There is also suggestions that taking Accutane or Roaccutane may lead to depression, anxiety, mood disorders and suicidal thoughts. Researchers still debate whether the drug causes depression however the manufacturer openly states that “Synthetic derivatives of vitamin A, can negatively impact brain chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin.”

    The FDA website goes on to warn “All patients treated with isotretinoin should be observed closely for symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts, such as sad mood, irritability, acting on dangerous impulses, anger, loss of pleasure … mood disturbance, psychosis, or aggression.”

    Furthermore, statistics show that there were 72 suicides linked to Accutane between 1989 and 2003 by American teens younger than 18. This statistic is HIGHER than suicides linked to Prozac – a popular anti-depressant drug.

    Accutane or Roaccutane works by stopping excess oil production responsible for causing acne. The issue is that the drug damages your sebum glands and liver function during the course of medication and your liver may not be able to balance your hormones properly.

    Did you know you can achieve the same results safely and naturally?

    Accutane or Roaccutane works to improve fat metabolism and reduce inflammation. However, it is possible for these benefits can be achieved naturally and safely.

    How? By eating the right diet, supplements and skin care alternatives that aren’t going to cause potentially irreversible damage to your body and depression. By increasing your intake of foods high in Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene you can effectively reduce the over-production of oil by your sebaceous glands without the side effects!

    How To Get Rid Of Hormonal Acne After The Pill

    Are you thinking about coming off the pill or birth control but want to avoid your skin going crazy? Or have you recently come off the pill only to get two or three months down the track and have your skin erupting in cystic acne?

    Want to get rid of hormonal acne after the pill? Read on:

    Learn how to prevent and cure your acne after coming off the pill, naturally. Now I will be honest, curing this type of acne is harder to treat than other types of acne due to your body trying to balance its hormones again. But you will get there, and a lot faster with these tips on how to get clear skin fast.

    Take A Zinc Supplement

    One of the first things you should do is go out or online and buy yourself a decent Zinc supplement. Why? Because zinc is directly involved in the metabolism of different hormones in your body. Low levels of zinc increase the conversion of testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) in your body which is one of the androgens that contributes to the cause of hormonal acne.

    You might notice that your skin is SUPER oily after coming off the pill which is the perfect breeding ground for more acne. This is because the increased DHT causes the enlargement of the sebaceous gland which increases the production of acne-causing sebum or oil!

    Dosage: Take 25-50mg of Zinc per day for best results in conjunction with the clear skin meal plan and advice in my eBook here.

    Limit The Caffeine 

    Swap your morning latte for a calming herbal tea instead. Tea’s like dandelion root, nettle, liquorice and cardamom all help to reduce inflammation in the body and support your liver and kidneys.

    You want to assist your body in healing and balancing your hormones so it’s best to avoid caffeine during this time. Why? Because caffeine increases your cortisol (stress hormone) levels and can wreak havoc on your endocrine system – leaving your body feeling stressed.

    The last thing you want to do during this time is place any more additional stress on your body, particularly if you are already suffering from hormonal breakouts. That in itself is stressful enough.

    Avoid All Toxins 

    Avoid all toxins, including the ones in your food AND your beauty cabinet. Be mindful that you are consuming the largest amount of toxins through what you eat so it’s so important to follow a clear skin meal plan like the one in my eBook – Clear Skin Project.

    One of the secrets to curing hormonal acne for good is avoiding toxins and drinking lots of water to assist your body in eliminating what it needs to. If you don’t avoid toxins and drink enough water, you may make your skin worse as when your body can not eliminate toxins normally, it can excrete through your skin instead.

    Be mindful that you can also be exposed to toxins through your beauty cabinet including harsh chemical skincare products, makeup and household cleaning products. Look out for ingredients like: SLS/SLES, mineral oils, parabens, PEGS, artificial preservatives, fragrances, parfum and colours.

    Add More Maca To Your Diet

    Maca powder is widely known for its history of promoting hormonal balance in both males and females. Most women will notice a decrease in PMS symptoms (YAY!), increased fertility, and improved skin.

    Maca is high in minerals and essential fatty acids, making it the perfect supplement for hormones and has relatively no side effects. If you plan on taking maca powder to help clear your hormonal acne naturally, you should start with a small dosage.

    How much do I take?

    Maca is a powerful superfood that can give you more energy than you re used to and can quickly support hormone balance. Ideally, you should start with around 1tsp of maca powder per day and then increase to 3 teaspoons over a period of 1-2 weeks. If you find that you are more hyperactive than usual or your acne becomes worse, you can lessen your dosage to suit your needs.

    Remember that natural remedies take a few weeks to hit your system properly so there may be around three weeks before you notice the changes affecting your body properly and improving your skin.

    Get Your Beauty Sleep

    We’ve heard this one time and time again, but in the case of treating hormonal acne – this really does work. One of the side effects of not enough sleep, is your body craving all the wrong foods. When this happens, you’ll more than likely feel tired and eat poorly based on not having enough energy to prepare your meals properly.

    In order to allow your body to balance its hormones correctly and clear your hormonal acne for good, you must get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep every single night. The optimum hours for sleeping are 10pm-7am so try to be in bed winding down with a cup of herbal tea or a book by 9:30pm every night.

    It’s really important to listen to your body during this time and allow it the rest it needs to balance your hormones naturally. Your body needs time to adjust to not being on the pill anymore and will be using extra energy to recover and heal.

    If you are finding it hard to wind down after work or school, try these simple tips:

    1. Run a bath with 2-3 drops of lavender essential oil.

    2. Burn 2-3 drops lavender essential oil in an oil burner before you go to sleep.

    3. Make a cup of chamomile tea before you go to bed, to relax yourself into dream time.

    4. Write all your thoughts and to do lists down in a journal before you go to bed so you’re not going to sleep worrying about what you have to do the following day.

    5. Listen to some relaxing music or meditate for 20 minutes before hopping into bed.

    Follow A Clear Skin Meal Plan

    This would have to be the MOST important step in curing your hormonal acne naturally after coming off the pill – I cannot stress this piece of advice enough. It is VITAL that you follow a clear skin meal plan, avoiding all the wrong foods and eating all the right ones.

    Your diet is a huge factor in curing hormonal acne quickly. If you follow a meal plan like the one in my eBook you will have much faster results in clearing your skin for good.

    Why? Because certain foods can make your acne worse and in turn will make you lose even more confidence. The last thing you want to do is lose hope and then go back on the pill in a desperate plea for clear skin again! Do not give into this temptation. You have decided to come off of the pill for a reason, so don’t feel tempted into going back on it just so you can put a temporary fix on the problem for a while – it will still be there when you try again next.

    By avoiding certain acne trigger foods and increasing your intake of acne curing foods, you are helping your body to clear your skin more quickly. Foods like pasta, white bread, pizza, cakes and sugar are things that you are going to be craving during this time – these are also the worst possible foods for your skin.

    By increasing your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables and consuming healthy grain choices like brown rice, quinoa and coconut flour – you are reducing the amount of inflammation in your body and improving your skin.     The Best Vitamins and Minerals to Clear Acne
    The best way to clear acne naturally is to care about what you put into your body, rather than what products you put on your face. Sure, skincare products play a really important role in how your skin looks and feels but what goes inside your body is far more important.

    We all know the basics for good skin – lots of water, minimise sugar and processed foods but there’s also great value in taking vitamins and minerals or supplements.

    Supplements can help fast track your results and give you a clear, glowing complexion, naturally. Stop the low-dose antibiotics and pharmaceutical medication and opt for a natural, daily vitamin routine to take care of all your skin woes.

    Zinc

    Zinc is my FAVOURITE supplement to use and recommend for acne. It made a huge difference in my skin, reduced my breakouts and even cleared up my skin tone. I now take Zinc every day.

    If you have acne, you should definitely try taking zinc. This is because one of the most common mineral deficiencies responsible for breakouts and acne is ZINC.

    Zinc essentially reduces the body’s inflammatory response to bacteria. Because acne-prone skin is far more prone to bacterial infection than normal skin, zinc can reduce the inflammatory effect of bacteria that’s responsible for turning spots red.

    Zinc is a mineral that helps heal the skin and prevent the scarring that acne can often cause. Sources of zinc are eggs, whole grains, nuts and mushrooms. Between 25 to 30 mg per day is recommended for acne or skin benefits.

    L-Glutamine

    Another personal favourite of mine and something that I take everyday.  L-Glutamine is an amino acid that helps restore a healthy gut barrier and assist the body to recover after exercise.

    You’ll hear of a lot of body builders using this after workouts as a way to help their bodies recover but L-Glutamine is actually a best-kept secret for clearing acne and healing a leaky gut!

    L-Glutamine is an amino acid that is fundamental to the health of the digestive and immune systems. Glutamine is great for repairing damage to the gut, assisting the gut lining to repair and regenerate, reversing damage caused by leaky gut, and reducing sugar cravings.

    Take 1 tsp in a glass of water twice daily OR you can buy capsules if you prefer.

    Probiotics

    Probiotics are a very important step to any clear skin journey. Why? Because skin problems are often linked to gut problems. If you have skin issues then you have a much higher chance of having gut issues too.

    When you suffer from gut issues, it leads to a bacterial imbalance in the gut which then weakens the protective lining. If this happens, toxins are allowed to remain in the gut or leak into the body causing an overload of toxins in your system. The result, breakouts.

    The best thing you can do to help heal your gut and prevent and bacterial imbalances, is take a daily probiotic. Probiotics introduce healthy bacteria to the gut and create a barrier to reduce inflammation which is linked to acne.

    Yoghurt with live active cultures, miso soup, coconut kefir, and sauerkraut can all boost your stores of skin-clearing probiotics.

    PS. Did you know that in 1961, a case report found that of 300 acne patients given a probiotic, 80% had clinical improvement.

    One of the most common complaints I hear from clients is “How can I get rid of blackheads naturally?” Thousands of products on the market promise the world but deliver nothing, leaving you feeling disappointed time and time again. You may have the most diligent skincare routine in the world but still suffer from those pesky blackheads that just will not go away! Before we get started on how to prevent and treat blackheads naturally, let’s find out more about them.

    What Are Blackheads?

    Blackheads are small bumps that appear on your skin due to blocked or clogged hair follicles. These bumps are known as “blackheads” because the bump itself looks dark or black. Blackheads are a less serious type of acne that are most commonly noticed on areas of the skin that are oiliest. For most, that area is the “T-zone” (forehead, nose and chin), though they can also form on the cheeks, chest and back.

    Essentially, a blackhead is a pore that has been blocked and prevented from secreting what it needs to including oil and dead skin cells. When this blockage occurs, the blockage gets pushed towards the skin’s surface until it comes into contact with air. When this happens, it oxidises and turns the bump black.

    Despite what you may think, the black part of a blackhead is not a speck of dirt! The oxidisation process causes the sebum to darken and form a black or dark mark. The process of oxidisation also happens to a banana or apple. Think about when you leave a sliced apple on a plate exposed to air, over time it begins to turn the fruit brown. This process is called oxidisation and is exactly what happens to your skin when it forms a blackhead.

    There are ways to naturally treat blackheads and clear your skin for good. If you are finding that blackheads are a constant skin concern for you, the best thing you can do is follow these simple skin care tips:

    1. Wash Your Pillow Cases Every Week

    Remember to wash your pillowcases every week, no exceptions.

    I know how much effort it takes you to wash your hair and sometimes the every second or third day wash can turn into once a week with the invention of dry shampoo. It is SO important that you wash your pillowcases every week to ensure you are not allowing your face to come into contact with any additional oils and impurities that may cause blockages and result in blackheads.

    Make it part of your weekly cleaning ritual to strip your bedding and wash every week as dirty pillowcases can often be the cause of breakouts including blackheads.

    2. Invest In A Facial Cleansing Brush

    Exfoliating is the #1 thing you can do to treat and prevent blackheads and clogged pores. Facial cleansing brushes are a great way to deeply exfoliate your skin and draw out any impurities that are trapped underneath the surface.

    A brush helps remove dead skin cells form your face quicker, and in turn prompt your skin to produce more collagen, and gradually, you get tighter skin. Plus, it will remove any oil or impurities that’s plugging pores and allows your moisturiser and serum to penetrate skin better.

    Using a facial cleansing brush is a more affordable way to treat your skin to a facial. I’m a big fan of the Clarisonic brush which will help to remove dirt, oil, and makeup while gently exfoliating your skin.

    Be sure to slowly introduce the facial cleansing brush into your skincare routine. Try using it once or twice a week at first and slowly build up your use. Normal skin types can use it every day, however more sensitive skin types should stick with once or twice a week.

    TIP: If you suffer from severe acne, I would recommend that you opt for an organic muslin cloth instead as your skin will be too sensitive to use a facial cleansing brush for exfoliating.

    3. Use Epsom Salts On The Affected Area

    Another effective and natural way to treat blackheads is to use epsom salts.

    1. Mix one teaspoon of Epsom salt in a little hot water until the salt dissolves completely. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.
    2. Use a cotton ball to apply to the mixture on the affected area. Allow the mixture to dry.
    3. Use a clean muslin cloth or wash cloth to gently wash it off.

    This is a great tonic to use before applying a deep cleansing mask or before your facial steam bath (instructions below) as it allows blackheads to loosen before they are naturally extracted with these tips.

    Note: You can also use epsom salts in a detox bath by adding 1 cup to your bath and enjoy for 20 minutes. Make sure you get your face wet too!

    4. Use Deep Cleansing Pore Strips

    Pore strips do help get rid of blackheads by extracting them out of the pore, but they work better after the plug has been loosened up.

    1. The first thing you need to do is to cleanse your face. This will remove any oil and dirt from your skin as well as help your pores open up.
    2. Pour 1L of boiling water from the kettle into a large stainless steel bowl. You can add one drop (no more than one!) of essential oil if you have any at home, otherwise the water on its own is just as effective.  Hover your face over the bowl and place a towel over your head and bowl to trap the steam in. Note: Move your face a comfortable distance away from the bowl if you are too close and the steam is too hot.
    3. Take your pore strips and follow the instructions on the back. Usually you must use the pore strip on damp skin so it’s best to leave your skin damp after the facial steam bath.

    5. DON’T Extract Or Squeeze Blackheads

    Attempting to extract or squeeze blackheads is one of the WORST things you can do for your skin. Not only is it incredibly dangerous but you are risking PERMANENT scarring, infection and more breakouts!

    Leave the extractions to your aesthetician or qualified dermatologist. According to the Huffington Post, attempting to squeeze blackheads on your own can lead to inflammation, infection, and even scarring.

    The only thing worse than pesky blackheads is, permanent scarring.

    Diet also plays a large role in banishing blackheads for good. Make sure you are enjoying a well-balanced, nutritionist approved clear skin diet to prevent and heal any existing blackheads and break outs.

    Method:

    1. Prepare your vegetables. Rinse thoroughly with water and cut into chunks.

    2. Mix in a blender or put through juicer until smooth.

    3. Serve with fresh mint or a slice of apple.
