    Holidays. They’re one of those things that you always think about doing, but never get the time to do. There’s never a “right time” for a holiday because life goes on and there’s always something to catch up on when you’re home.

    Truth be told, we need rest. It’s important to give your body time to recover and heal in order to de-stress and detox the body. Rest and recovery also play a vital role in keeping your skin clean and clear.

    The Organic Eco Village

    My choice of paradise was Desa Seni Resort located in the beautiful Canggu, Bali. From the moment you arrive, you will be inspired to live a healthier life. Think organic vegetables, perfectly manicured gardens and a custom detox menu. The grounds and menu however, were just the beginning.

    Desa Seni Health Resort is located just 15 minutes away from Seminyak offering a true cultural experience. The resort is organic, eco-green, and offers some traditional Balinese healing treatments.

    The Detox Program

    Desa Seni invites you to choose between multiple detox packages including intermittent fasting, rebalancing the self and detoxification. My choice was the 8-night detox package.

    My package included:

    • Custom detox menu made with organic vegetables (breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks)
    • Daily yoga (sometimes twice daily!)
    • Daily acupuncture with the amazing Dr. Thomas Sladek (highlight of my trip)
    • 2 Chinese cupping treatments
    • Daily Chinese detoxifying herbs
    • 1 Reflexology Treatment
    • 1 Desa Seni Massage
    • 1 Salt Scrub

    My Experience at Desa Seni: Life Changing

     They say you get worse before you get better and I definitely agree with this. The first few days of the detox, I was incredibly grumpy and emotional. I chose to stay on the resort and completely commit myself to the detox so I could experience the best results.

    By doing this, I stuck to the diet 100% and did not have any distractions or comfort food. This was probably the thing I noticed the most. When you take the comforts and crutches away, you really can focus on healing yourself.

    The daily Yoga was fantastic. It encourages you to still the mind, let go of things that have happened in the past and strengthen your body. I think it’s a perfect type of exercise to combine with this type of healing program as it’s not overly strenuous on the body while it is trying to heal.

    I literally felt as though all the toxins in my body were coming to the surface in the first few days of the program. By the fifth day, I started to feel incredible. I had more energy, I felt lighter, could think clearer and my skin was looking amazing.

    The daily acupuncture treatments were my favourite part of the detox. The knowledge that Dr Thomas Sladek has on the body is fantastic. I asked lots of questions during my treatment and we discovered a weakness in my body that I am now working on improving here in Australia.

    How to Avoid Hormonal Menstrual Acne
    For most of us getting your period means you also have to deal with PMS, cramps and a shocking headache or back pain. It seems completely unfair that this is also the time we have to deal with those “time of month” breakouts!

    I’m here to tell you that there IS a way to prevent these monthly breakouts from occurring. Yes, that’s right. There is a natural way to banish these breakouts for good.

    What Causes Hormonal Breakouts?

    Hormonal or menstrual breakouts occur during your monthly cycle or during pregnancy. This is due to the hormonal changes experienced in the body during menstruation.

    It can be visible as early as 7 days before you are due to menstruate but can also clear up as soon as menstruation begins.

    The common causes of hormonal acne:

    • Fluctuations in hormones
    • Poor skincare routine leading up to and during menstruation
    • Poor diet leading up to and during menstruation (drop the junk food!)

    As we approach menstruation, our hormone levels begin to shift from female hormones (estrogen and progesterone) to male hormones (testosterone). An increase in testosterone can result in our skin being more prone to acne, particularly those painful cyst like nodules.

    The shift in hormones can lead to sebaceous glands increasing in activity and manifesting oily skin. This then increases the chances of acne lesions, oily skin and an oily scalp. This is also the perfect time for inflammation and breakouts to occur.

    The Solution to Hormonal Acne

    The week before your period is due is the week where you are most prone to excess oil production. Your skin will look more shiny and you will be more prone to breakouts including cystic acne – those deep painful cysts usually on the chin or jawline.

    Follow these four skincare tips:

    Cut the Dairy

    Modify your diet by reducing or removing dairy from your diet. Dairy contains cow hormones that can increase activity in your oil glands. Opt for an organic rice or oat milk instead.

    No Sugar

    This is the time where we feel like devouring a whole block of chocolate in one sitting, but I can tell you that this is the worst thing for hormonal acne. In order to prevent hormonal acne, it’s really important to keep your blood sugar stable and reduce the inflammation.

    Include Protein in Every Meal

    Be sure to include a protein source in every meal (doesn’t necessarily have to be meat) whether that be an egg, protein powder or lean turkey.

    Exfoliate Your Skin 2-3 Times Per Week

    It’s hard to find the motivation to upkeep your skincare routing when you are feeling fatigued and crampy, but exfoliation is key in preventing hormonal breakouts. Be sure to exfoliate 2-3 times per week to reduce bacteria, remove dead skin and increase circulation.

    Forget over-priced facials and chemical products! This effective acne scar face mask can be made in your very own home with the most natural ingredients.

    1. Combine the juice of 1 lemon and 3 tablespoons of yoghurt in a small mixing bowl
    2. Massage onto clean, dry skin
    3. Leave on for 10 minutes
    4. Rinse well

    For best results, follow with 2-3 drops of a Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil on clean, damp skin.

    We have all heard about the great health benefits of coconut oil incorporated into your diet. I bet you haven’t thought to use it in your beauty regime though! Coconut oil is so versatile and it is a great cheap, natural alternative to products filled with nasty chemicals that damage your skin.

    Cuticle Care

    That’s right! You can use coconut oil on dry and flaky fingernails. Massage a small amount onto your nail beds twice daily for strong and healthy nails.

    Makeup No More!

    Coconut oil is a gentle way to remove makeup from around the eye area. Melt down in your fingers and gently tap around your eye area. Remove with a damp cotton pad.

    Baby Lips

    Transfer 1 tbsp into an empty lip balm pot or small jar and keep in your handbag. I use it under my lipstick and on tinted moisturiser only days.

    Luscious Body Oil

    Coconut oil is my go-to body oil. It contains a natural SPF4 sunscreen and keeps my skin hydrated morning and night. I find it’s best applied to clean, damp skin.

    No Frizz

    I swear by Coconut Oil as a hair serum. I always use a small amount of coconut oil to tame split ends and sleek down any fly-away hairs!

    Top 3 Acne Myths Revealed
    Acne is the most common skin condition in the world yet there are so many myths on what causes it. You name it, I’ve heard it.

    “Wash your face more”

    “Leave your skin alone for a while”

    “Go out in the sun more and dry it out”

    I’m here to shed some light on this topic and share with you the Top 3 most common acne myths I hear ALL the time.

    MYTH #1: If you wash your face more, your acne will go away.

    Wrong. Acne has nothing to do with how many times per day you wash your face. Although good skincare practice is extremely important in the fight against acne, if you wash your face ten times per day your skin won’t suddenly clear overnight. Over washing can also strip the skin of its natural oils, which means moisture needs to be added back on and that leads to the need to buy more skincare products. When using a new cleanser make sure it doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry or tight.

    Tip: Cleanse your skin with a gentle, natural cleanser morning and night. Rinse well with clean water.

    MYTH #2: Leave your skin alone and the acne will clear on it’s own.

    Wrong. Leaving your skin alone and hoping for the best is not going to magically clear your acne. You could be waiting months or years for results doing this. The worst part is, results may never arrive. Acne affects people of all ages, so if you think it will go away once you get older, you may be wrong.  In order to achieve clear skin you have to be ready to overhaul your entire life, this includes the way you eat, think and things you do.

    Tip: In order to take control of your skin and regain your confidence you must be proactive in the fight against acne.

    MYTH #3: Go out in the sun more and dry your acne out. 

    Wrong. Sun damage is responsible for 95% of wrinkling so it’s recommended to always wear a sunscreen when outdoors, even in the middle of winter! Truth is, the sun can actually make breakouts worse. Particularly if you are already prone to acne! UV rays can damage the skin and weaken the barrier, causing a loss of moisture. This can lead to overproduction and overgrowth of sebaceous glands resulting in blackheads.

    Tip: Always wear a sunscreen and remember to cover your neck, décolletage and the back of your neck.

    How To Make An Acai Smoothie Bowl
    So, you’ve seen all those amazing photos of Acai Smoothie Bowls online but have no idea how to make them? Today I’ll show you how!

    What is an Acai Bowl?

    Essentially, an acai bowl is similar to a smoothie because it is made in the same way but blended until it’s the consistency of ice-cream. An Acai Bowl is served in a bowl and then topped with all your favourite fruits, seeds and nuts. The consistency of an Acai Bowl should be thick and creamy and eaten with a spoon.

    How To Make An Acai Smoothie Bowl

    Prep Time 5 mins
    Cook Time 1 min
    Total Time 6 mins


    • 2 packs Frozen Acai
    • 1 Frozen Banana
    • 1 scoop Protein Powder optional
    • 1 splash Dairy Free Milk almond, coconut, rice
    • 1/4 cup Frozen Berries


    • Add all of the ingredients except for the milk into a blender of food processor
    • Blend your acai smoothie
    • Add liquid very slowly, adding more until desired consistency is reached
    • Once your smoothie base is the desired ice cream consistency, simply spoon the mixture into your bowl of choice 
    • Use a chilled bowl to prevent the smoothie melting too much when you are eating it
    • Top with your favourite toppings. See tips below!

    TIP: Now it’s time for the fun part. Adding all your favourite toppings.

    Be creative. Think fresh fruit, nuts and seeds. You can even do an organic gluten-free granola layer and top with coconut flakes!

    Some ideas are: nuts, cacao nibs, a splash of coconut milk, coconut flakes, fresh berries, sliced fresh banana, chopped nuts and chia seeds.

    Are you the type of person who LOVES chocolate but haven’t found a healthy alternative? Well, look no further! I have the perfect substitute. The best thing is all the ingredients in this recipe are good for your skin.

    Just make sure you don’t overindulge!


    ¾ cup Coconut Oil
    ¾ cup Honey
    1 cup Cacao Powder
    Favourite nuts for topping

    1. In a food processor, combine all ingredients together until well combined.
    2. Pour mixture into a muffin cake tray lined with cupcake patties OR pour into a baking tray lined with baking paper.
    3. Top with your favourite nuts.
    4. Freeze for 30 minutes.
    5. Break into bite size pieces

    It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for. The product that will become the staple product in your bathroom for curing acne scarring is rose hip oil.

    Yes, oil. I’m telling you to put oil on your skin. Seems crazy huh? Truth is, brands have been brainwashing you for YEARS. You’ve been told to use oil-free products if you have acne and dry your skin out completely to help heal and prevent breakouts.

    I’m here to tell you otherwise. Oil is not the enemy and will not ruin your skin. In fact, certain fruit oils can actually re-balance your skin and give it the hydration it needs, thus minimise breakouts. The best part is that it not only rebalances your skin, but it also helps to improve the appearance of acne scarring.

    If you dry your skin out too much, it will not only become dehydrated but it will also be more prone to further scarring. The best thing you can do for your skin is keep it hydrated, both inside and out. That means you must eat foods that hydrate your body internally, drink lots of water and maintain a good skincare routine.

    The best type of oil for your skin is rose hip oil. It’s packed full of essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants to keep your skin hydrated and help to improve the appearance of any scarring.

    Which One Do I Use?

    Quality is very important when it comes to oils. Although you may not think it, there is a difference between budget rose hip oil and a premium quality rose hip oil.

    Look for Certified Organic rose hip oil that has been accredited by the USDA, ACO, ECOCERT or BioGro. An organic governing body has officially accredited any oil with this accreditation and you are guaranteed to receive the real deal.

    Rose hip oil should be dark. Not clear. Rose hips are red so it’s only natural that the oil should be a similar colour. If the rose hip oil is lighter than a golden yellow, try something else. The darker your rose hip oil is, the higher the quality.

    How Do I Use It?

     There are three golden rules to live by when using rose hip oil.

    1. Firstly, rose hip oil must be applied to clean skin after cleansing or exfoliating.

    2. Secondly, it MUST be applied to DAMP skin to help with absorption. Never apply to dry skin.

    3. Thirdly, less is best. You only need to use 2-3 drops. This will be more than enough to cover your face and neck area.

    P.S Don’t be surprised if your skin purges a little after using this product, it’s known to detox the skin and release any built up grime that has been trapped under the skin.
