So the acne is gone, but you’re left behind with red marks or deep scarring and have no idea how to fix it. How can you speed up the healing process of acne scarring to reveal a clear, smooth complexion once again?
End the search, I’ve found the cure.
How to cure acne scarring is one of the most commonly asked questions I get asked everyday. What if I told you there was a way to magically speed up the healing process and help improve the appearance of acne scarring?
How Acne Scars Are Formed
Acne scarring can strike at any age as a result of moderate to severe acne. In particular, the formation of cysts or nodules can cause inflammation and damage the natural collagen in your skin.
Then there are the red marks that appear when your skin is trying to heal itself. The good news is that most red marks are not permanent and are easy to cure.
Acne Scar Removal Products
I’ve tried and tested countless scar removal methods over the years, some with no success at all. There are thousands of products available promising amazing results but deliver nothing. I’m here to clear the air on what works, and what doesn’t.
Your Go-To Acne Scar Removal Product
It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for. The product that will become the staple product in your bathroom for curing acne scarring is rose hip oil.
Yes, oil. I’m telling you to put oil on your skin. Seems crazy huh? Truth is, brands have been brainwashing you for YEARS. You’ve been told to use oil-free products if you have acne and dry your skin out completely to help heal and prevent breakouts.
I’m here to tell you otherwise. Oil is not the enemy and will not ruin your skin. In fact, certain fruit oils can actually re-balance your skin and give it the hydration it needs, thus minimise breakouts. The best part is that it not only rebalances your skin, but it also helps to improve the appearance of acne scarring.
If you dry your skin out too much, it will not only become dehydrated but it will also be more prone to further scarring. The best thing you can do for your skin is keep it hydrated, both inside and out. That means you must eat foods that hydrate your body internally, drink lots of water and maintain a good skincare routine.
The best type of oil for your skin is rose hip oil. It’s packed full of essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants to keep your skin hydrated and help to improve the appearance of any scarring.
You only need 2-3 drops to reap the benefit of this magical oil. Simply massage into clean, damp skin morning and night. Follow this daily for up to three months to see best results.

Which One Do I Use?
Quality is very important when it comes to oils. Although you may not think it, there is a difference between budget rose hip oil and a premium quality rose hip oil.
Look for Certified Organic rose hip oil that has been accredited by the USDA, ACO, ECOCERT or BioGro. An organic governing body has officially accredited any oil with this accreditation and you are guaranteed to receive the real deal.
Rose hip oil should be dark. Not clear. Rose hips are red so it’s only natural that the oil should be a similar colour. If the rose hip oil is lighter than a golden yellow, try something else. The darker your rose hip oil is, the higher the quality.
How Do I Use It?
There are three golden rules to live by when using rose hip oil.
1. Firstly, rose hip oil must be applied to clean skin after cleansing or exfoliating.
2. Secondly, it MUST be applied to DAMP skin to help with absorption. Never apply to dry skin.
3. Thirdly, less is best. You only need to use 2-3 drops. This will be more than enough to cover your face and neck area.
P.S Don’t be surprised if your skin purges a little after using this product, it’s known to detox the skin and release any built up grime that has been trapped under the skin.
Have you used rose hip oil before? Did it cure your acne scarring? Let me know your experiences below!

I’ve started using rose hip oil about 2 weeks ago, and I can already tell the difference in the look and feel of my skin, and my acne is notably reduced every single day! It’s such a fabulous product! I have oily skin in my T-zone, and I’ve noticed throughout the day my skin is less oily when I substitute the moisturizer for the oil. When it comes to moisturizing, is oil enough?
And thank you for all of your fabulous advice and blog posts! I’ve been looking for a natural way to get rid of my acne for years and I’m so happy I stumbled upon your site! It’s been my go-to for the past year!
So glad to hear that Heather! It worked wonders for me too. Keep it up and within three months you should be virtually scar free. Olivia x
What if you do use too much? Could it damage the skin?
Hi Chantelle, definitely not. It’s a natural oil packed with vitamins, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. It won’t damage your skin, it will just make you a little oily 😉
Thanks! 🙂
I found this certified organic, but is it normal to smell a bit like fish oil? Or is the one i bought bad maybe?
Definitely not meant to smell like fish oil – sounds like it’s gone rancid. Give the brands customer service line a call & quote batch number to them. They should send you a replacement if the batch has expired.
Because Rose hip oil is so natural, it doesn’t have a super long shelf life and if the lid is left off, it will oxidise straight away.
Keep it in a cool, dark cupboard away from heat and light if you can. Will maintain shelf life much longer for you!
Thanks for the rose hip info. My daughter has been using neat tea tree oil on her face, is this Ok?
Is it for scarring? If so, rose hip oil would be the best bet!
Otherwise, if it’s for acne.. I would suggest taking her through the info in the Clear Skin Project program 🙂
I have oil-dry skin, it can become very puli sometimes but also very dry at times.
I have tried various products to reduce my acne and also acne scars. I have found a way thats suitable for my skin to reduce my acne however I still had scars.
In the past I have tried honey and also glycerin on my skin and these two products made my acne worse. Will rise hip oil still be okay to use?
Rose Hip Oil will be great for you to use on your skin. It’s a rich source of vitamins, essential fatty acids and antioxidants so acts as a multi-vitamin for your skin! It’s 100% natural and most people don’t have any side effects from using it, not even break outs. I know it seems strange to put an oily on acne-prone skin but it actually helps to rebalance the oils in your skin naturally making it less prone to break outs.
Be sure to use 2-3 drops on damp skin, not dry skin. If you apply it to dry skin, it won’t absorb properly and you’ll feel too oily.
I hope this helps and you might like to check out my eBook too if you’re still experiencing breakouts. The eBook will guide you through treating them naturally and there are lots of transformations to prove the results under “transformations” on this site.

Hi Olivia 🙂 can you recommend any good brands of rose hip oil in Australia? Is rosehip oil also good as a moisturiser for dry skin? I’ve tried jojoba oil but it didn’t really help with dry skin I found. Thank you!
Hi Monika! I prefer Rose Hip Oil myself and the best brands in Australia would be Sukin, Trilogy or Akin! I hope this helps. You can usually get some good prices at Chemist Warehouse or sales at David Jones 😉 x
Would you recommend using rose hip oil as a moisturizer then? Normally I cleanse and then put a moisturizer on. Lately I’ve been using an aloe moisturizer. Just not sure if its necessary to cleanse, use the rose hip oil, and then moisturize. I don’t break out much anymore but I have red spots/scars that I would love to get rid of 🙂 Thanks for your help!
You can definitely use rose hip oil as a moisturiser! Just remember to use only 2-3 drops onto clean, damp skin for best results. If you use too much, you end up looking oily from all the residue.
The scars will definitely benefit from the rose hip oil. Took me about 3 months of twice daily use with rose hip oil and they were all gone! x
Hey Olivia this article is really interesting and I really want to give it a try. My problem at the moment is that around the mouth area are red blemishes and my skin is very sensitive. Would you recommend this to get rid of those red blemishes or aloe Vera gel? Also is trilogy rose hip oil okay?
Btw I love you page and articles! 🙂 big thank you x
Hi Flo! Thanks for writing to me 🙂 The best thing to use to fade those red marks and scarring is rose hip oil. Either Trilogy, Sukin or Akin would be perfect. I hope this helps x
I got the Pai Rosehip Oil a few days ago Ive been noticing a few in the skin pimples so Im guessing thats my skin purging! I wanted to know what you would recommend I use to exfoliate for combination acne prone skin?
I personally love La Mav and People for Plants.. I would give either of their exfoliants a go first x
I’m using Trilogy’s Rosehip oil and it works to make my skin smoother and clearing the dark spots. However it’s hard to tell whether it can also reduce the redness of acne marks or not since the redness doess change sometimes but slightly
Hi Farah! The redness is more than likely caused from internal inflammation. I would recommend following the advice in Clear Skin Project to help reduce redness x
Hi Olivia…lovely information…just a couple of doubts… 1. Do we have to have to use rosehip oil undiluted ? 2. Or if I blend it with say almond or coconut or olive or tea tree…will the result not be the same ? as I get scared to use it undiluted… 3. rosehip and rosehip seed would be the same…right ? Sorry to ask this silly ? but just yesterday I went hunting for rosehip seed oil and the SA were like why don’t you take rose or rosemary…lol…We Indians I tell you…ha ha
And may I request u to share some information on red raspberry seed oil as I have a very strong feeling after doing the little research on Internet that it should be one of the best oils for all acne scar related issues but I am no pro in all this so I don’t trust my own research…lol and sadly internet does not have much information on this particular oil…
eagerly awaiting your reply…God bless you for this amazing work that your doing
Hi Namrata! It is best to use the oil undiluted as it is a fruit oil and not an essential oil. There is no reason to be scared to use it and if you are worried about a reaction you could always try doing a test patch behind your ear for 24 hours before you use the product on your face 🙂 There are lots of oils which are great for the skin and once your acne has cleared up you can use powerful berry oils to keep your skin looking youthful x
HI….I have acne scars all over my cheeks and chin…will rosehip really help. I’m 40 and I don’t have anymore breakouts, – Avocado, Olive and Hemp oil helped in that area. Just need the scars gone.Thanks. great article.
Thanks for all the information. I get acne around my jawline and also lots of scars from old acne, my skin is combination and sensitive. I am thinking of buying trilogy rosehip oil, but someone suggested me that trilogy rosehip oil with antioxidants is better option. what would you suggest, which one is better for skin and scarring?
I just bought a bottle of the rosehip seed oil and a bottle of aloe vera but it seems I put too much rosehip oil in the aloe vera will this be a problem…. I have acne and dark spot on my face and I decided to use these 2 products together.
Hi Shantele,
Which brand of rose hip oil did buy as there are HUGE differences in quality between brands? I would suggest that you use the rose hip oil first and then the aloe vera on top instead of mixing the two.
